Multi-tasking the L3 - 8/28/09

So, I'm sitting here in Subway again, eating my sandwich and barbeque Baked Lay's, writing today's L3 with about 25 tabs open in Firefox, and listening to a segment on NPR's Science Friday (over the awful music they play in here) about how multi-taskers aren't as good at doing said 'tasking by multiple means.  Shyeah... right.

  • I was lucky enough to go see Video Games Live while in L.A. for E3 and I would love to see them again.  Good thing they're coming to Augusta, Georgia on September 25th (just 3 days before my birthday)!
  • I love Red vs. Blue.  I have the whole series on DVD and have watched them all way too much.  They guys over at Rooster Teeth have created a new video for the release of ODST next month.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

One of the best experiences I had at E3, aside from having the opportunity to interview Charles Martinet - the voice of Mario, was playing the red and blue hopscotching plumber's latest and greatest offering - New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I had been clamoring for a New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the DS (remaking the original Super Mario Bros. 2 [the Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic redesign] with the hopes that they would then move on to remaking 3 as well), but honestly, this new Wii game may be even better.  I played it with three random strangers and had no qualms about stealing coins and suit upgrades or messing with them using the new grab mechanic to come out victorious.  And that's why I'm so stoked for this game - it will allow me to overinduldge in one of my favorite videogame deeds - griefing (except when playing with my mom - she's having enough trouble on the original NSMB as is).

Seriously, if this game isn't on your radar for one reason or another, you swiftly need to reconsider.

A Wedding & Some Housekeeping

Despite my sporatic updates and random promises of content, it really feels like I've abandoned Southern Gamer as of late - and in a way, I suppose I have. Not for any grim reasons or a lack of motivation, but because of a little thing which occassionally takes precedence over videogames - Life. Yeah, I've been living life lately. I got married to my wonderful wife Lauren on the 10th of July and we spent the following week on the Hawaiian island of Oahu (seeking out and geeking out over LOST locations among other things). That came just a little over a month after Hodges' and my trip to E3, from which I still have a literal crap-load of stuff to post. Since returning from our honeymoon, most of my non-working time has been spent getting our new house together, cleaning, mowing the grass, weeding, putting furniture together, watching a little Battlestar Galactica here and there, burying our beloved pet guinea pig (RIP Penny), and cooking. Somewhere in the cracks of all that, I've managed to sneak in a few minutes, maybe a couple of hours on the weekends, of good ole' gaming downtime - enough so that I actually have a couple of write-ups in mind which I will hopefully grace your eyes with soon.

Aside from the literal aforementioned housekeeping, I also wanted to point out that I replaced the default Squarespace comment system with Disqus, which is far more robust and user-friendly. You can now comment on any post here on Southern Gamer with your OpenID, Facebook, Twitter, or Disqus account - which I think should take care of just about anyone that might want to lend a voice to the Southern Gamer readership. Hopefully this will make it much easier and more appealing to leave me comments, which I strongly encourage (Seriously! Leave me feedback. I'd love to build a community of like-minded gamers here, southern or not).

Anyway, so that's what's been going on with me lately. Expect some more posts soon, and hopefully another episode of Twang will make its way to the interwebs too - of course, we have to record one first.

Until then, enjoy this picture of my groom's cake. I received quite a few compliments on it.

Nintendo Legend of Zelda Cake

How freaking rad is that!? (I have to thank Scottie's in Florence, AL for the cake and Simply Bloom Photography for the pictures. Amazing work all around.)

Post-E3 Super Swag Giveaway!

Wow, look at all that gameity-goodness.  By all accounts, the distribution of swag at this year's E3 was lacking compared to previous years (well, except the last two), but I did manage to get my hands on some pretty sweet stuff to give away.  So, for Southern Gamer's first official giveaway, here's what I want you to do:

Record your opinion of what the best announcement of E3 was (this can be a video clip , an audio recording, a stop-motion mocumentary with CGI special effects and your best friend Tom Cruise playing your sidekick, etc. - bottom line is that I want a recording of some kind.)  The Swag is tiered thusly:

1 Grand Prize: A copy of Battlefield 1943 for the PS3 and a Battlefield 1943 T-shirt

1 First Prize: A copy of Battlefield 1943 for the PS3

2 Second Prizes: A key for the Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves Multiplayer beta (ends June 28th) for PS3

1 Third Prize: A Left 4 Dead 2 poster (and some other assorted swag)

1 Fourth Prize: A Southern Gamer T-shirt (and some other assorted swag)

And, a few other Southern Gamer knick-knacks may be sprinkled in with all of the prizes.

All submissions must in some way mention the "Southern Gamer Post-E3 Swag Giveaway" just so I can make sure they are legitimate entries and not material created before the posting of this contest.

Email your entries to southerngamer[at]gmail[dot]com, with the subject line "Southern Gamer Post-E3 Swag Giveaway".  Video entries must be uploaded to Youtube, with the link provided in your email.  Audio entries must be under 5 MB, but may be attached to the email.  And, if you can come up with something other than a video or audio clip, then your chances for winning the Grand Prize are that much greater - remember, I'm looking for creative/humorous/intelligent entries.  Thinking outside of the box can only help your chances.

The deadline is 10:00 PM CST, June 14th.  Winners will be notified by 10:00 PM CST, June 15th.

Good luck!

Interview with Charles Martinet - The Voice of Mario

I had the great pleasure of getting a quick interview with Charles "It's-a-Me, Mario!" Martinet.  He is an incredibly nice guy and offered far more than I could have asked for in my first "real" interview.  Check it out below:

Edit: And the internet is once again confounding me.  Somehow the sound got out of sync after getting uploaded to Youtube.  I'll work on fixing it later.

Day 2 Pictures

File formats and internet connectivity issues are still impeding my attempts to upload video from these past two days.  Luckily, pictures are working okay - so here are some more. (Click the image for the entire gallery) Enjoy!

Mario Galaxy 2

We're just about to head to the show floor for day 2 of E3, but before that, I wanted to post a quick trailer of Super Mario Galaxy 2... because, well, it's awesome.  Check it out.

I still have the video from the Sony Press Conference converting to an editable format (the one caveat of the Creative Vado HD is that it only records in AVI, and of course, iMovie, or even Quicktime for that matter, won't recognize the files).  Seriously, Creative - you need to work on this.

E3 in Pictures

Well, due to an uncooperative computer, and in lieu of some full-fledged video content (including some of the Sony Press Conference) please enjoy this gallery of pictures taken during our first day walk-through of the L.A. Convention Center.   Video later - I promise.
