L3 - August the Last

I'm starting to think that after a whopping three "Luncheon Link Liasion" posts, that I should probably rename it something more mundane like "Daily Links," or just name each post individually since this is just my blog and not an actual publication or anything.  I just love alliteration too much (remember the stint of Single Sentence Stance?).  I need to break that habit.  Anyway, there's not a whole lot going on today in the gameverse... but away we go:

Gameboy iPhone Case

I'm looking for the best iPhone case on the market, one to protect my buttons, my speakers, and everything else under the hood...

While googling the universe to death, I stumbled upon this image on multiple blogs, so I thought I would share it with the Southern Gamer world!

A Gameboy case for the iPhone 3G, made in Japan, and as far as I can tell, not sold in stores. Sorry kids, you'll just have to admire the view.

Mass Effect Galaxy

Is Shepard really dead? Bioware has the plot for Mass Effect 2 on lock down, but to help you pass the time to 2010, you can download Mass Effect Galaxy on the iPhone, or iPod Touch.

Commander Shepard isn’t the only human with unique alien friends and an epic story. In Mass Effect Galaxy you play as Jacob Taylor, a soldier with biotic and combat powers to rival any enemy he faces. The game flows like an interactive web comic with fight sequences interjected in the midst. For some this is a little anticlimactic, but the game is fun nonetheless.

ME Galaxy combatME Galaxy dialogue– You know, they're facing me, but talking to each other :)The accelerometer is used to control your movement across the screen, which takes some getting used to. The automatic recalibration as the game un-pauses is a great feature for gamers on the move; this allows you to play while moving from one environment to another without exiting your game and navigating to a settings menu.

I won’t spoil the storyline of the game, but it’s a fun and lighthearted game. Like in Mass Effect, your choice of dialogue can alter the path of the game, which can initiate a fight or avoid one. Combat is fairly simple with a selection of powers to use in combat on the right hand side of the screen. You view your combat from an aerial view and navigate through a linear maze, taking out enemies and collecting power ups on the way.

Effect Galaxy is no 360 title, but it is a solid title for the iPhone OS. Putting to good use the accelerometer, story and unique game play, Mass Effect Galaxy is a must play for the adamant Mass Effect fan.

Even cats play ME Galaxy, so why don't you?

The iPhone iPwns

ipwnSo I've had an iPhone for all of a week now and already my life has been changed by it.  I'll dispense with most of the glowing endorsements I could give it for its remarkable music playing-phone call making-location tracking-web browsing-spledor, but I will focus on one thing that I wasn't fully prepared to be astounded by -- the games. Admittedly, I knew that many gaming websites and other entertainment authorities already had great things to say about the iPhone's games and the future of the device as a legitimate gaming platform (for example - The Future of Portable Gaming, Apple Pins Its Hopes On Gaming, Apple Thinks the Future of Gaming is the iPhone - We Kinda Agree) but I guess I didn't think Apple could so easily sweep in and secure a place for itself on the same pedestal occupided by the DS and PSP.  But that it did. I can tell you the exact moment that it dawned on me that Apple had "made it" into the gaming world.  I was sitting at work on my lunch break playing a couple of rounds of TapDefense and Aurora Feint when I thought, "Hmm... maybe I should make an iPhone section on Southern Gamer."  Then I realized that I don't even have a DS or PSP or even a 'Portable' section -- I just write about games overall.  But here was this sleek little black device whispering at me to give it a section all unto itself.  Of course, I have fought back against this urge... but then again, I am writing a slobbering endorsement of the thing.  Why, just tonight I was jogging on the treadmill in my apartment's gym - which I typically get bored of fairly quickly, even when listening to music or a podcast.  Oh, but let me tell you how great it was to play the simple little TapDefense while listening to a podcast (This Week in Science to be exact, which I also very highly recommend).  I had literally jogged two miles before I realized how much time had passed.  So there you have it, the iPhone is also doing its damndest to get me fit! One of the greatest things about the iPhone is the distribution model for its games.  My instant-gratification gland went into immediate overdrive when I first entered the App Store and saw all of the free and very cheap games.  It's obvious that Sony and Nintendo are taking notes as the PSP will have an online store next year that offers all of it's games for download and Nintendo has its own online-distribution model in the works for the new DSi. So, I have to concur with the articles linked to above -- Apple has arrived in the gaming world, and with such an outstanding first entry, it is very likely to remain there.
