I haven’t played an MMO in well over a year when I quit World of Warcraft for the third time. I’m becoming more of a ‘pop-in-for-30-minutes,’ and, dare I utter it, a ‘casual’ kind of gamer as of late. Despite this, I’ve definitely had my eye on Star Wars: The Old Republic from BioWare. The thought of running around in a persistent ‘Old-Republic’ style universe almost makes me salivate, but then the urge to regurgitate shortly follows as my mind dredges up memories of Star Wars Galaxies. Then, a game that has completely evaded my radar hits me over the head with an amazing trailer and even more amazing promises to shake up the MMO paradigm. Observe:
The realistic style, actual real-world (and yet, fantasized) settings, and history-rooted factions all really pique my interest, considering that most people fall in step with WoW when it comes to these aspects. And if the realistic setting isn’t enough to interest you, the committment to completely change the character progression trope should be. The true freedom to create your own class by mixing and matching powers is really inticing; I just worry about the level of balancing that such a system will require.
Keep your eyes peeled. From what little I’ve seen, The Secret World really seems worth watching.
